A teaching qualification aimed at professional performers and vocational college graduates

Urdang Academy is an ISTD Approved Dance Centre offering all units of the Level 4 Diploma in Dance Education (DDE) for the Modern Theatre and Tap genres. Urdang Academy is offering the qualification to graduates from vocational colleges and professional performers on a part-time basis.

The course is led by Dr. Nathan James who is a Fellow and Examiner for the ISTD and is a member of the tap faculty and tap teaching team.

Classes take place weekly on a Monday starting at 9.30am and will commence in September 2020.  You will have 2 technique classes during the day (at Intermediate standard) and 2 sessions for subject analysis to focus on the teaching of technique syllabus.

The teaching/practical units are delivered face-to-face and all written units are now delivered online, so can be taken as a distance-learning course.

The DDE consists of the following content:

Unit 1: Preparing for Safe Teaching
You could be exempt from this diploma with a Trinity Diploma in Professional Dance/Musical Theatre (and some degree courses).

Unit 2: Observing, Assisting and Teaching Practice
You will be required to undertake 4 lesson observations, 5 lessons in an assisting teaching capacity and leading 5 lessons of 45 mins duration.

Unit 3: Vocational Graded Examination in Dance: Intermediate
Assessed through a practical exam – you will be exempt if holding Intermediates in Modern and Tap with the ISTD or other recognised exam bodies.

Unit 4: Dance Practice
You will be assessed on your syllabus and teaching knowledge in Modern and Tap focusing on Primary to Intermediate level.

Unit 5: Social, Emotional and Cognitive Development
A written unit focusing on the development of students. You will be assessed via a series of online tasks.

Funding
The fees are available upon application. To offer maximum flexibility, fees are payable per module and per genre so that you can spread the cost of the training.  Learning materials (such as syllabus books) and examination fees are payable in addition to the module costs.

Entry Requirements/Application

All applicants are required to have a pass mark for GCSE English. You should have a sufficient technical ability in the chosen genre/s of study and have passed or be able to pass the Intermediate Vocational examination.

You will be required to submit any evidence of prior learning (Intermediate report/s, Trinity or degree certificate) alongside a video submission for each genre that you wish to undertake.

If you wish to apply for the course please contact istd@theurdang.london for further information and registration documents.

"Doing my DDE at Urdang has been great. I have been given lots of support and guidance on both the practical and theoretical elements of the course. The course has helped me to fine tune my technique in addition to improving my teaching skills."

Open Days & Auditions 2020/2021

Open days

Open days
All our Open Days are now fully booked.

We now recommend making an online application. We audition everyone who applies. Click on APPLY NOW for more details.

On the audition day candidates will spend all day at the Urdang and get the chance to speak to staff and current students. Parents/guardians will also be given an introductory talk by staff at the beginning of the day.

If you have any further enquiries please email: admissions@theurdang.london

Auditions

Auditions
Urdang Academy is currently closed for the time being due to COVID-19.

While we await official government advice on the timescale for our continued closure, Urdang is now advising that all students who have applied for a place for 2020 entry, but have yet to be auditioned, make a video audition.

If you have applied for an audition in March. April or May you will receive an email from us in due course with details of what to prepare on video.

We understand this is not an ideal solution, but at least it gives us a chance to assess you sooner, rather than later in case we are unable to host you for your audition. You will not be assessed on the quality of the video production, but on your potential as a performer.

If you are unable to make a video then do let us know. We may be able to make alternative arrangements later in the year or we can offer you a free audition for 2021 entry. Online applications will go live in September.

Please email the College Administrator, Will Bird, on: will@theurdang.london if you have any further queries.

Applications

Applications for 2020 Entry

Urdang Academy is currently closed for the time being due to COVID-19.

Unfortunately Urdang will no longer be accepting applications and video submissions for our BA (Hons) Degree or 3 year Level 6 Diploma after our advertised deadline of the 31st May.

There are a few vacancies on our 16+ 2 year Level 3 OCR (AVT) Diploma and our 1 year 18+ Foundation Course so we can still accept online applications and videos for these until 12th June.

Don’t forget to let us know which course you are applying for when sending us your videos.

We appreciate the problems in filming a video audition under the current circumstances and are grateful to the hundreds of candidates who have managed to do so over the past 2 months, however there has to be a cut-off date when courses start to fill up.

If you have already paid for an audition, but not been able to film a video in time, please email us to request a refund of your audition fee with the name of the person who paid for it.

Applications for 2021 entry will go live in September when we will have a better idea of how we run all auditions in the future.

If you require further information please email admissions@theurdang.london
