Urdang Academy students perform at memorial tribute to Thea Barnes
Leading lights from Theatreland, the dance sector and the Barnes family came together to pay tribute to, honour and celebrate Thea Nerissa Barnes’ legacy in dance. The event took place on Monday 12 August at the London home of The Lion King Musical – The Lyceum Theatre.
Attendees were treated to a array of live performances, including Freedom performed by Urdang students and choreographed by Neo Gordon and also performances from Germaine Acogny, members of West End musical; Disney’s The Lion King, Tavaziva Dance and Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Dance and Music.
Thea Barnes dedicated her life to the art of Dance. She graced audiences internationally with her bold, strong, yet gentle presence. Thea taught and transferred her knowledge to assist others in gaining from their own learning experience.
The event also marked the launch of The Thea Barnes Legacy Fund, (TBLF) which has been created to keep her legacy alive and support the work of current and future artists in dance and the performing arts. By funding and mentoring these artists the fund will help to create opportunities and contribute to keeping the industry vibrant, diverse, innovative and inspiring for future generations to come.
